Runway at Luxembourg Airport fully operational again afteremergency landing

An emergency landing was made at Luxembourg airport on Sunday afternoon of 14.05.23 at around
19:00 h. A Cargolux freighter reported a technical defect after take-off in Luxembourg and had to
return to the airport. For this purpose, the Airport Emergency Plan was activated, flight operations
were temporarily suspended, the runway was kept clear and the CGDIS airport fire brigade was put
on standby. During the subsequent emergency landing, the aircraft lost part of one landing gear but
came to a safe stop. And most importantly, no one was injured.
The subsequent inspection of the runway revealed damage that had to be repaired before resuming
flight operations. This work involved localised milling of the asphalt layer and subsequent re-filling
and lasted until shortly after midnight. After completion of the works, a thorough inspection of the
runway was carried out to ensure that it could be put back into operation without any problems and
in a safe manner.
The comparatively short closure period is due to the good cooperation and commitment of the
teams from the Administration de la navigation aérienne, CGDIS, lux-Airport, ground handlers,
airlines and the companies carrying out the works. Nevertheless, the runway closure due to the
emergency landing had a significant impact on evening air traffic.
13 arriving flights had to be diverted to Liège, Brussels, Paris and Strasbourg and 31 flights had to be
cancelled altogether. 8 departures and arrivals were significantly delayed, in addition, some
exemptions were granted for night flights.
Today, Monday 15.05.23, there were and still are isolated delays, but air traffic is increasingly
returning to normal over the course of the day. From today’s perspective, yesterday’s incident has no
effect on the upcoming travel days over the long weekend.
